Own a genuine piece of Roman history from the brief but infamous reign of Caligula (Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, AD 37–41). Struck in Rome during his first year as emperor (AD 37-38), this large bronze As (Æ As) captures the imperial propaganda of the early Julio-Claudian era. Obverse: Bare head of Caligula facing left, encircled by the bold legend C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT – proudly proclaiming his titles as Caesar Augustus, Germanicus (from his father's military fame), Pontifex Maximus, and holder of Tribunician Power. Reverse: Vesta, the revered goddess of the hearth and home, seated left on an ornate throne, holding a patera (libation bowl) in her right hand and a long transverse sceptre in her left. VESTA inscribed above, with S-C (Senatus Consulto – by decree of the Senate) in the fields, emphasizing the Senate's role in authorizing the coinage. Reference: RIC I 38; BMCRE 45-48; Cohen 27. This example weighs approximately 8.89g and measures ~27.5mm – classic dimensions for the issue. The coin displays a dark, earthy green-brown patina typical of ancient bronzes, with honest circulation wear and some natural surface roughness/pitting that speaks to its 2,000-year journey through time. The portrait remains recognisable, the legend mostly legible, and Vesta's enthroned figure clear enough to appreciate the design's elegance. Graded in the lower range (comparable to Fair/Good to lower Fine in ancient coin terms), it offers excellent value as an affordable, identifiable Caligula bronze without the premium of higher-grade specimens. These Vesta Asses are among the most accessible coins from one of Rome's most notorious emperors – perfect for collectors building a Twelve Caesars set, enthusiasts of Roman religion/mythology, or anyone seeking a tangible link to the imperial world.#RomanCoin#AncientCoins#Caligula#JulioClaudian#RomanEmpire#BronzeAs
