1953 Coronation Commemorative Mug – Queen Elizabeth II – T.G. Green & Co Church Gresley – Made in England Event: Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Date: June 2nd, 1953 Maker: T.G. Green & Co Ltd Origin: Church Gresley, England Material: Glazed earthenware Description This charming mid-century commemorative mug was produced to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2nd, 1953, one of the most iconic royal events of the 20th century. The front features a beautifully detailed portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II in profile, set within a crowned medallion and surrounded by the inscription: “Coronation June 2nd 1953” Flanking the portrait are vibrant Union Jack and royal standard flags, together with floral emblems symbolising the nations of the United Kingdom, all rendered in rich period colours. The reverse displays the classic royal cipher: E II R (Elizabeth II Regina) topped with a royal crown — a timeless and highly recognisable royal motif. The mug has the traditional chunky commemorative form with a stepped base and gently flared rim, giving it a solid quality feel. The base bears the clear maker’s mark: T.G. Green & Co Ltd – Church Gresley – Made in England along with the British Pottery Manufacturers’ Federation official design mark, confirming English manufacture. ⸻ Condition Good vintage condition. • No cracks or repairs • Age-related crazing to glaze (typical and expected) • Bright colours with minimal wear • Clean interior Presents very nicely overall.
